David and Elmers Fishing Trip
When I wrote the story about Ted, David said "Do Me Do Me"
So thought I would tell you the fishing story and how we almost lost David.
Elmer and David decided to go fishing east of the mountains. They loaded up the truck and took their boat and all their equipment, snacks galore etc. They were going to float down the river and fish for trout. It had been a rough couple of months as far as rain was concerned and the river was well upon its banks and flowing rapidly. It was not a wise decision, but for two
confirmed fishermen, it was a perfect day. THE SUN WAS SHINING.
All went well, until something happened and the boat overturned and threw them into icy cold rushing water. David went under and almost drowned. They lost their fish, they lost their lunch, they lost their equipment and we almost lost David. Elmer lost his billfold, but they saved themselves and the boat and got home safe.
Elmer of course, had to do the usual and get new paperwork and he regreted the $100 bill he always stored in his billfold for emergencies.
The following summer Elmer and I were going over the mountains to gather some weeds for flower arrangements. When we passed the place where they had put the boat in, Elmer said lets go see if we can find my billfold. I said "Yeah, Right, like thats going to happen" It had been a year at least. But he insisted, so we prayed and then went into the river and because it was really low we walked along the area where they had fished. Elmer started searching in the sandbar in the middle of the river and I was walking along the bank, not really looking.
Suddenly he shouted, I found it and I didn't believe him, but he did actually find his billfold. All of his papers had disintegrated, but there were pieces of his $100 bill still there. I still have those pieces.
Our miracle was they did not drown and the fun was, he found his billfold.

That was the mighty Yakima river, and we lost a big stringer of fat rainbows, also. I truly thought I was going to drown, and just barely had the strength left to get my boots off. I was jellyfish bobbing in a whirlpool as big as a house when I finally was shot out and down the river. I could not brake with my feet because I had no shoes and the rocks were pounding my heels. Finally, I crawled out, just about where the boat had been stuck in some rocks. I was lying prostrate and exhausted on the overturned boat when Dad arrived working his way down the river, picking up tackle as he walked. He spotted me and yelled, "Well, what the hell are you doing? Get busy and start looking for stuff!!" He did not know that I had just endured a near death experience.
When we pried the boat loose (the suction of the river was holding it in place), the rest of our stuff popped out and took off down the river. Dad's wallet had been placed in the open tackle box for safe keeping, and evidently lodged in the rocks. I had to hike out to the blue van without shoes.
Later, Dad went to that spot and miraculously poked around in the sand until he found his wallet. He said that he had felt prompted to search and was not a bit surprised by the find. Mom was just happy to get some good teezel for her dried flower arrangements.
I'm not real sure, but I think the boat tipped when Dad was reaching over me trying to cast into my good spot!
Sounds like Dad. You were alive,so why weren't you working! Although it seems like a miracle to us, I don't for a minute think that Dad considered that he WOULDN'T find that wallet. He had that kind of faith. Glad you made it, brother, otherwise I wouldn't have Delynn for a sister and I wouldn't be Aunt Grace to your wonderful kids or GREAT Aunt Grace to Kaden, Connor and Mason.
Fun story. I love hearing these great memories! Good job Grams...keep up your blogging!
Such funny stories...yes, we want more, thanks for sharing them with us.
Hi Grams... thanks so much for the pictures of the boys in the mail. They loved looking at them and they're once again asking for a convertable like Aunt Grace... love you, great blog! Dana
