Johann Heid Immigrant
The Heid name in German means "Heathen"and we have a long line of Heids dating back to Georg Heid in the 1690s.
They lived mostly in the area around Mostveil, Bavaria, Germany. The village was so small the houses had individual numbers. Our Heids lived in Mostveil #3 and in the early days owned the mill and most of the businesses in the area. Even today the Heid name is on alot of the businesses.They were a prolific race and it is said the cemetary abounds with the name Heid.
Our Johann Heid was born 11 April 1809 in Mostveil. The mill belonged to another branch of the Heid family by then and since Johann was not the firstborn son he made plans like alot of other Germans to seek his fortune in "The New World" He and his wife Katharina (Schmidt) Heid and their small daughter Johanna set sail for the United States. They sailed on the ship "Peter" out of Bremen, Germany.The Captain was F.A. Barries and they arrived July 6, 1852.He was listed as a laborer and planned to stay in the USA. They traveled in a cabin instead of steerage so he had some money, perhaps his inheritance.
Their daughter Johanna died on the voyage and was buried at sea.When they arrived in the United States they immediately traveled to Indiana where their friends had gone before them. He bought land to farm and helped build the church that still stands today in Lamar, Spencer, Indiana.
It is interesting in the 1860 census, the name was spelled Hide and German was the only language spoken in the home.
They had 5 children born in the USA. John Frederick(our Line) born 14 June 1856, George born 21 October 1859, Kundigunde( who called herself Julie)born 20 January 1861, Elizabeth born 3 October 1863, and Catherine born 10 February 1865 who died 27 August 1875.
Johann (John) died 14 January 1887 and was buried in Lamar, Spencer, Indiana. His obituary was written in German.. We have a copy of his will written in English and he leaves each of the children #20.00 and everything to his beloved wife for her natural life, including his 80 acres of land.He stated she was to sell whatever was needed to pay any debts he might have left. His will was written in 1884 and he died 14 January 1887. His will was recorded on the 21st of January 1887 and written in English. He signed it in English as John Heid.
So died our German Immigrant and Pioneer, an example and Hero to all.

I love it Grams. I love all of these stories. Keep them coming. It makes me want to visit Indiana to see where they lived. Any relatives in Pennsylvania?
I guess that is one of my namesakes for my middle name, huh.
There is one change to the story. Johanna did not die on the boat. That was a family legend that was perpetuated by time. Johanna was on the list of passengers that arrived in this country, but evidently died on the way to Indiana as she was not listed on the first census that showed the Heid(Hide) family.
